In many of the minor monuments of ancient Egypt, successive periods of history lie one on top of another: image upon image, color upon color, texture upon texture.  Hector Leonardi’s new paintings combine the memory of that experience with a grid structure such as many good painters have lately employed and some textural variants of his own devising.  All this works particularly well on a large scale, with an overflow of strong feeling kept in check by the patchwork of the grid and some idiosyncratic markings and mottlings to keep our imaginations on the jump.
